Event synopsis/general info:
The Man in The Woman’s Shoes
For the first time ever, Irish actor-writer Mikel Murfi brings his enormously big-hearted, ridiculously energetic one-man show “The Man in The Woman’s Shoes” to Gorey Little Theatre on Saturday 28th September 2019 as an Oscarz fundraiser for St.Aidan’s Services, Gorey.
Set in October 1978, not long after the death of Pope John I, The Man in the Woman’s Shoes is a charming and funny encounter with an ageing man who has a boundless enthusiasm for life.
Meet cobbler Pat Farnon (Mikel Murfi), who wears women’s shoes to ‘break them back in’ after repairing them. We join him on his five mile walk from his wee white cottage to town and back again and get to witness the marvels and characters he meets along the way.
There’s water diviner Huby Patterson; Kitsy Rainey, the lady manager of the football team, athlete Casimir Marshall; an array of farmers all named Gilhooley; and Kemp, a man whose idea of a good time is to direct traffic wherever he may find it. It is a beautifully observed piece; utterly simple, funny, tender and at times downright daft.
The show was originally created with Sligo County Council Arts Service and The Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo as part of the Bealtaine Festival 2012. In 2015 it toured to Manhattan and Philadelphia as well as a sold out, three week run at the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage in Dublin. In 2016 it returned to NYC and ran for three weeks at the Tricycle Theatre in London to standing ovations.
Described as extraordinary physical performance steeped in sharp observational comedy – this is a play not to be missed in Gorey. Booking online at www.gr8events.ie or call Catherine on (086) 0579326 or Joe (087) 2898802.
